Little Things

I can’t help but smile each time I see your face when I wake up. We are happily in love and have been staying together for more than six years. That means I have been waking up by your side for more than two thousand times. You can’t imagine how blessed I feel to be able to fall asleep at night with you and to wake up to this beautiful face each morning. Feeling your warmth next to me and seeing how innocent and child-like look while you are asleep is one of the best parts of my day. If I’m awake earlier than you, I resist from brushing my fingers through your short blonde locks and from kissing the tip of your nose in order not to wake you up. On a few occasions, I would pretend to be asleep just to bask in your tender touches as you sweep my bangs aside. I can sense you smiling as you lay on your side and admire the beauty in front of you, heehee!

Every weekday morning, there is always a pot of steaming hot coffee sitting on the table along with my favourite white ceramic mug by the time I peel myself off the bed. Sometimes, there is a sandwich loving made by you. Other times, there is a slice of strawberry cake bought from my favourite store. Once, I remembered you made a cheese sandwich and squirted a red heart on top using tomato sauce. Now, that was and still is a really cheesy pun. Nonetheless, you never fail to ensure I have a proper breakfast before I get to work. To top it off, there is always a handwritten note, written on whatever you can find; a torn envelope, a post-it, a piece of scrap paper, a torn corner of yesterday’s newspaper. The messages range from a simple morning greeting to overly cheesy words of love.

Enjoy the one and only coffee made with love.

Keep calm and look forward to spending the weekend together.

If love were a cup of coffee, ours would be a mocha latte; sweet, hot and bubbly.

Everyday Love.

These notes brighten my day and never fail to bring a smile to my face. I’m sure you don’t know that I write the date at the back of every single note and keep them in a tin box in my cupboard. (Psst, my favourite note is still the last one I listed down above.)

Your tight hug before we separate for work gives me the confidence to trudge through the daily grind and return quickly to your side at the end of the day. I like how your hand fit perfectly with mine when we stroll down the street. I appreciate how you subtly pull me away from one too many sales at the stores without creating a scene like how some other couples do. I do notice and am thankful that you remember how many cubes of sugar I need for my coffee and would always add them for me when the coffee arrives. You need your cup of earl grey tea before you sleep and that’s probably why you talk in your sleep occasionally. Your arm around me when we sleep chases away all my worries for the day.

You don’t like how the corners of your eyes wrinkle when you smile but that’s adorable to me. You don’t like how you get fat easily at the waist but it makes you nicer to hug. (You’re way too skinny to begin with, hmp!) You chide yourself for being clumsy but it makes me laugh and want to spend the rest of my life with you so that I can take care of you. You often bite your lower lip when you’re deep in thought and prefer to be left alone when you’re stressed. I just want you to know that I’m always by your side.

It’s the little things you do that make me fall deeper in love with you each day. It’s all these little things that add up to you. You often think you’re lacking in certain areas but that doesn’t put me off because I love the imperfect you, like how you love the imperfect me. I’m in love with you and all the little things about you.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Tae.

Love, xoxo
